Koala Art and Life Residency
코알라 예술과 삶 레지던시

Gwangju, Korea

February 2016 - August 2017

On February 2016, I quit my job to focus on my main profession: an artist. To apply for an artist residency program in Gwangju, I stayed with Koala, an artist friend, who lived in Gwangju at the time. While waiting for the result of my submission, I had an idea: why don’t I create my own residency program? It was fortunate that Koala was open for the idea. After we figured out how to live together, the residency project naturally focused on sharing interests and sincerity of arts and living daily life. I named it “Koala Art and Life Residency.” I presented two parts 'home' and 'office' like below.

project 1. Ice-cream Sundae Laboratory

January 2016 - September 2016

15 healthy ice-cream sundae customized for an artist

Most people think ice-cream sundae is high in calories and unhealthy, so I’d like to challenge the thought by creating new recipes to feel less guilty eating it. I planned to make a look-book with recipes of ice cream that harmonizes with healthy ingredients. Koala, the owner of the residence where I lived in 2016, was physically and mentally weak at the moment, so I carried out my idea on her. I believe sweet and healthy food enriches our lives and it was a perfect opportunity to apply the idea in real: making healthy sweet dishes to boost up my friend. There were fifteen ice cream dishes, and all the recipes were successful to both: the eater and the cook.

project 2. Well-known farmer's delivery service

Various vegetables from their farm

Working away from hometown in 2016, Koala and I could receive a lot of relief from a number of people. The best thing was from friend's parents: they had grown vegetables and fruit by them selves. One day, they sent basil with stems, eggplants, and pumkin etc. in a paper box. In gratitude for their heartfelt gift, this project centers on the recipes that go well with the food and thanking them.

During the residency, I participated as a member of Mite-Ugro, an artists-curators collective (2016 Gwangju Biennale local associated curator team) for Biennale-related works and proceeded with my personal work. In Mite-Ugro, I was in charge of the program “Monthly Gathering,” preparing food for different gatherings and running the program with a tight budget.

The work from this era significantly inspired me and became the base of my work showing how the inspiration and consolation from the job daily done and repeatedly conducted are expressed through art.
